CORUNDUM
Corundum is the most interesting mineral on the planet. It is possible to find corundum in almost any color in nature, and even with a color change effect depending on lighting (the so-called alexandrite effect).
RG Crystals meets expectations of our clients when it comes to the range of available corundum colors which are continuously complemented with new ones. At present our synthetic corundum is available in more than 30 colors. Of course, our products are not comparable to natural gemstones in terms of colors, but we strive to improve our performance. We were even able to reproduce a sapphire with asterism’s effect. Asteria or the star sapphire is a blue-colored corundum with a surface, in which three crossing bright lines forming a hexostar are visible. This is where its name comes from. Moving or rotating a light source or the stone itself makes this star look alive. The star starts to move over the cabochon’s surface, but its geometry does not change as the angle between its rays always equals 60°. This is due to certain features of a corundum’s crystal lattice that has a trigonal symmetry. The unusual structure of crystal lattice as well as dense atomic packing within endows corundum with its unique properties such as hardness, chemical resistance and infusibility. Thanks to its properties, synthetic corundum is largely used in precision mechanisms, aeronautical engineering, optical equipment, and, of course, in the abrasives industry.
Jewelry owners do not care much for corundum’s resistance to various aggressive mediums and heating up to 1800 °C. It is corundum's durability, optical clarity and wide range of beautiful and captivating colors that make this stone so popular in the jewelry market. Every year companies such as Pantone, which are engaged in coloristics, define fashionable colors and shades for each given season. So stones which shine on podiums and are popular in haute couture and the jewelry market are now available among corundum stones manufactured by RG Crystals.
The color of 2017 has been named as Greenery 15-0343 by the Pantone Corporation and has been available in a range of corundum colors provided by RG Crystals for more than 10 years. It is named Extra Green Corundum and has become increasingly popular among our company's global clients. A range of our corundum colors also includes Rose Quartz and Serenity colors which were considered by Pantone Corporation as the colors of 2016.
All the most expensive and popular natural corundum colors are also reproduced by RG Crystals. Corundums of any color other than red are called sapphires in accordance with gemological terminology. Red corundum is called a ruby. Of course RG Crystals primarily produces well recognizable and popular classic rubies and blue sapphires. We also offer so-called fancy colored corundum. The names of colors are created in accordance with the name of natural stones of this color and a compulsory specification of the stone being a still corundum rather than any other mineral. We offer orange pink padparadsha (#55), blue-green tourmaline corundum, gentle purple amethyst corundum (#65), alexandrite corundum with a bluish green color turning to a ruby red in the light of a fluorescent lamp or in sunlight (#46), pink (#2) yellow (#20) and blue topaz corundum (#30), kunzite (#65) and orange imperial corundum (#22).
There are many other colors of corundum supplied by RG Crystals. All the synthetic corundum colors were assigned certain numbers for the sake of simplicity and to avoid mix-ups during repeat orders. This numbering system is common and considered international. All the colors listed above may vary in terms of density. So the color may have the same name but a different number.
Please kindly pay attention to the color's number when ordering corundums at RG Crystals.
